These colors are alive and may deepen when washed with hot water - a beautiful shift that represents nature's changing seasons.
Sally Fox of Foxfibre® has been a major inspiration to us ever since we connected with her this past Fall. She’s dedicated her whole life to growing and breeding the best Organic naturally-colored cotton. We can’t wait to share more about her work and story. Read on to find out about what makes Foxfibre® Colorganic® so special.
What color is cotton, really?
White cottons have been the primary crop cultivated in the US and around the world for centuries. Growers have even fought to keep colored cotton from being grown for fear of it cross pollinating with the white cotton varieties.

Record of colored cottons started between 5000-7000 years ago when cotton varieties exhibiting different color characteristics were sorted and bred by cultivators in Central and South America.
There were varieties of pinks, reds, yellows, browns and greens. These colors were the result of short cotton strands being filled with tannins, whereas white cotton had longer strands that were hollow.

Though other colored varieties were also known to be indigenous to Africa, India, Russia and Asia, it is believed that naturally colored cotton made it’s way to America sometime during the 17th century!
There are still very few growers of colored cotton, but we were lucky enough to find one of the best here in the U.S.A. Sally Fox grows her FoxFiber® Colorganic® cotton in New Mexico in the hues you see in this collection.
So, what color is cotton? It grows in many colors! And we are so happy to bring you this beautiful representation of nature's hues.
What makes it so special?
- Since the textile isn't dyed, the colors are fade resistant + non-toxic. This also means there's no dye pollution!
- These plants are naturally hardy and don't need harsh chemical fertilizer or pesticides to stay healthy and thriving.
- Naturally-Colored Cotton has a better yield and qualities of strength + compared to conventional white cotton.
