Varsity Jackets have been around since 1865, as they were introduced by Harvard as Letterman Sweaters worn only by the members of the baseball team at the time. These sweaters were worn proudly with a hand embroidered H on the front. Since only those who played well were allowed to keep the sweater, they became a symbol of prestige and elitism.
Eventually they became synonymous with the American high school + college experience sometime in the 1950’s. They symbolized athletic achievement, school pride + belonging. Once professional sport franchises took notice in the 80’s the popularity of varsity jackets exploded. Through the years one thing has continued to remain the same: varsity jackets represent more than just athletic achievement. They hold memories, traditions and experiences unique to the wearer; the stories often told through embroidery, patches and symbols.
