A few months ago, Liz, Audra, and I were brainstorming ideas for a mini January collection. It had been a while since we'd done anything interesting with the Cinema Pants, and we knew it was time to breathe some life into them. They're a classic design, and we wanted to revisit and create something that everyone could wear - regardless of gender. We decided to put a pair into production using our new-to-us deadstock Cone Mills Denim. Our Fall denim campaign had been really successful, so we thought, why not? At the time, we didn’t have any denim pants on the site, so it seemed like the perfect fit.
I brought the sample home for my husband to try on, wash, live in, and fit-test. When he initially tried them on, he didn’t love them and thought he would never wear them since they weren’t his usual style. Days passed, and we still weren’t sure whether or not we’d offer them for our January collection—until one day I came home from the studio to find him blissfully napping in the denim Cinema Pants. Napping. In. Denim. Pants. I (respectfully) took a photo and sent it to Liz and Audra, then decided to see how often he would reach for these pants and document the entire thing.
It wasn’t long before I caught him working from home in these pants, snow blowing the driveway in these pants, and wearing them out of the house. They quickly became a pant he would feel comfortable doing just about everything in. So our decision was made.
If you’ve ever tried to get your partner to wear something you think they look good in but they aren't certain about, you know how easily they get spooked when you show excitement. So I had to play it cool and pretend like him reaching for these pants didn’t make me want to jump for joy since it validated my gut feelings about making these pants in denim.
Everyone needs a pair of functional and stylish denim pants. I love that these pants are different from traditional jeans. They are much more interesting and functional! The deep side pockets are accessible and the drawstring / elastic waist combo allows for a comfort some jeans just don't offer.
Overall I think this is a really great example of how sometimes a garment surprises us. Or how sometimes, we surprise ourselves! Personal style should feel effortless and easy for the most part. But sometimes, it challenges us. Sometimes, we don't truly know what we need or what our closet is missing until we happen to stumble upon something unexpected.
